In loving memory of
Charles Stanley HIPWELL, M.C.
Lieutenant Queen'sWestminster Rifles
2nd son of John Charles and Annie Eva Hipwell
born 4th September 1887, killed in action 15th October 1916
Interred in Maroeil Cemetery, France.

On Sept. 23rd 1916 he led a successful raid into the enemy trenches which resulted in the capture of prisoners. He engaged a fire bay full of Germans and silenced them with his revolver, remaining standing on the parapet while his men crossed the hostile wire and thereafter until the last man had left for our lines. He went out again under continuous fire to search "no man's land" for a wounded man. The success of the raid was due to his determination and resourceful leading for which he was awarded the Military Cross.
