Sad death of a Workhouse Apprentice
The Clerk read the following
letter from Mr Samuel P. Hunter, secretary of the
Grimsby and North Sea Steam Trawling Committee Ltd:
We regret to inform you of
the sad news of the loss of E. E. Barnes whom we
took from your institution (Bledlow School) as a
fishing apprentice. He was one of the crew of the
Perseus which was unfortunately blown up by a mine
in the North Sea on Saturday July 3rd. Barnes was
progressing well and would have made a man of himself.
This is all the information we can offer as none
of the crew were saved.
In another letter it was stated that it was a German
mine. The Chairman said he was sure they all regretted
this and the loss of their former scholar at Bledlow
where he was considered to be a promising boy. He
was always a good lad and invariably took the first
prize in the competition for school gardens instituted
by Mr Stratfold Read.
